Ethiopia: Visa Implementing Decision

In accordance with Art. 25a of the Schengen Visa Code and based on the report of the European Commission, the Schengen Area Member States decided to temporarily adopt an visa implementing decision with respect to Ethiopia starting June 1, 2024.

The implementing decision applies only to citizens of Ethiopia who require visa to enter the Schengen Area and who apply for a Schengen visa regardless of their place of stay.

The implementing decision does not apply to citizens of Ethiopia who are family members of EU citizens or those who apply for a Schengen visa for the purpose of participating in an international organization meeting organized directly by the governments of EU Member States. There are no other exceptions.

When applying for Schengen visas, citizens of Ethiopia are required to observe the following:

  • all applicants must present all required supporting documents
  • holders of diplomatic and service passports must pay visa fee
  • period to decide on an application is extended to 45 days (as opposed to 15 days)
  • only a single-entry Schengen visa may be issued
  • this implementing decision is in effect as of June 1, 2024
