Czech humanitarian Aid in Somali region

From 15 to 18 July 2019, Ambassador Pavel Mikeš and Martina Rubešková, Head of Development Cooperation visited the Somali region for monitoring a humanitarian project supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. Ambassador was accompanied by the representatives of the implementing organization ADRA - Lenka Kostelecká, project coordinator, and Zbyněk Wojkovský, Head of the International Projects Department. On this occasion, all of them met with the Afder Zone Administrator and Qohle Woredy representatives where the project is implemented.
Life-saving WASH interventions for drought-stricken communities in the Somali region, a project supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in cooperation with ADRA, which is the implementer in the location. The main goal of the project is to improve access to safe drinking water for drought-stricken communities, to ensure basic conditions for sanitation, and to support livelihoods for the most vulnerable in the communities.

As the drought in Ethiopia recurs almost every year, the local population, who mainly make a living as herdsmen, is forced to search for new places and sources of water. This humanitarian project is an immediate solution to water shortage, ensuring the distribution of drinking water and endeavouring to contribute to a sustainable solution.

The support by the Czech Republic and ADRA is very appreciated, as no other donor is active in the Somali region to implement its projects. It is a gratifying fact that the Czech Embassy received thanks from the local authorities. The Embassy in Addis Ababa evaluates the project very positively and we hope for further continuation and its improvement.
