The Embassy of the Czech Republic invites individuals from around the United States to submit a photo and/or a brief description depicting where they were on November 17, 1989, the day the Velvet Revolution began in former Czechoslovakia.
The Velvet Revolution toppled the communist regime, which had ruled the country for more than forty years, and reinstated a democratic government. The year 2019 marks 30 years since this most defining moment in recent history for the Czech people.
Where Were You?
The Czech Embassy would like individuals to share where they were on this unforgettable moment in Czech history; a bloodless revolution that brought down a totalitarian government over the course of several days from November 17 – December 29, 1989, and once again aligned the Czech people among the democratic nations within the Western hemisphere.
The Czech Embassy is seeking photos and/or brief descriptions (80 words maximum) to capture the defining moment in history through the eyes and memories of individuals, whether from the student front lines in Prague on November 17 or in front of televisions in the United States in the days to come as the demonstrations spread throughout Czechoslovakia and grew larger with each day. If the individual was not in Prague on November 17, 1989, the photos and descriptions may be from the time period when the individual learned about the revolution, i.e. the ‘it’s really happening’ realization, and may reflect on the individual’s feelings of angst, triumph, and hope. Please include the exact location and date in your descriptions.
