The performances are part of the celebrations surrounding the 100th Anniversary of Czech Independence as well as part of the Georgetown University Theater & Performance Studies Program's 2018-19 season "Friends, Far & Near."

Protest / The Debt	PROTEST / THE DEBT Sept. 21, 8 pm |Sept. 22, 4 pm (talkback) Protest by Václav Havel, Translated by Jan Novák The Debt by Marek Hejduk, Translated by Alex Zucker Both plays are directed by Daniel Hrbek What happens when two writers meet - one who is not allowed to write and the other who writes whatever he wants? What if the first one has a surprising proposal for the second one? And what if the two of them meet years later when they can write freely but it is not working? Pankrác '45	PANKRÁC '45   Sept. 22, 8 pm | Sept. 23, 2 pm  By Martina Kinská, Translated by Barbara Day Directed by Martina Kinská            Casting for an execution...Based on the real-life incarceration of five women in the Pankrác Prison during a time of post-WWII national cleansing in Czechoslovakia, this story explores the relativity of guilt, responsibility for one's actions, and the struggle to survive within the machinery of history.          Location: Davis Center, Gonda Theatre

SVANDA THEATRE   
Svanda Theatre is one of the oldest drama theatres in Prague. It´s focused on contemporary plays and also on the bold adaptation of classics. Besides its own repertoire, Svanda Theatre offers a wide range of supporting events such as concerts, talk shows, independent theatre group productions, stage readings and also the best of Czech regional theatre work. The theatre also produces public workshops and productions for children, which per year comes to more than 450 events. The politician Václav Havel, musician Lou Reed, writer Robert Fulghum, singer Suzanne Vega, actress Annie Girardot, actor Dennis Lavant, photographer Oliviero Toscani, cameraman Miroslav Ondríček, costume designer Theodor Pištěk and artist Klaus Voorman have appeared as guests of Svanda Theatre in recent years. Almost all productions of Svanda are accompanied by English subtitles. Svanda Theatre has been successfully represented at theatrical festivals in Russia, Belarus, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. It was also awarded the prestigious Alfred Radok Award for its dramaturgy.
