On Wednesday, 19 December, the National University of Mongolia (NUM) hosted Language Day, a traditional event organised by the Department of Languages focusing on the presentation of language programmes and study opportunities abroad. Czech is among the languages taught at NUM, where Mongolian scholarship holders prepare for further studies in the Czech Republic.
The Department of Languages prepares presidential scholarship students for studies in a number of countries, including Australia, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, the Republic of Korea and the United States of America. Among European destinations, the Czech programme represents the second-largest group of students after Germany.
The Language Day programme also featured a Christmas performance, during which students presented a dance choreography to the well-known Czech Christmas carol Rolničky, rolničky. This was followed by an information stand introducing Czech Christmas traditions to approximately 300 visitors.
After the official programme concluded, the traditional Christmas meeting of Czech language students took place. The gathering brought together students of Czech from NUM, scholarship programmes and private courses organised in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ulaanbaatar, and was attended by Czech language lecturers. Around 30 Czech-speaking participants took part, representing various levels of proficiency—from beginners to very advanced students. The growing popularity of this annual event confirms that the Czech language has established a strong and lasting presence in Mongolia.
