PRAGUE ZOO STRENGTHENS COOPERATION IN MONGOLIA:Collaboration with the Institute of Biology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences Opens a New Phase in the Return of Przewalski’s Horse.

Ulaanbaatar – On Monday, 26 January 2026, at 2:00 p.m., Prague Zoo and the Institute of Biology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Mongolia.

“The signing of the memorandum represents another important milestone for Prague Zoo in its long-term and successful efforts to return Przewalski’s horse to eastern Mongolia. We are pleased that, as a diplomatic mission, we can support this project,” said Czech Ambassador Jan Vytopil.

A key element of the Return of the Wild Horses project is the newly strengthened cooperation with the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, focusing on research in the Valley of Monasteries in Nömrög Strictly Protected Area. “The joint research will provide essential insights into local fauna, the environment, and approaches to its conservation. At the same time, it will enable a valuable exchange of expertise between Czech and Mongolian specialists and contribute to the further strengthening of international cooperation in the field of nature conservation,” added Gantulga Davaakhuu, director of the Institute of Biology of the Academy of Sciences.

Prague Zoo began the reintroduction of Przewalski’s horses in 2011. The current population of horses in this country now numbers approximately 800 individuals.
