The key mining-sector trade show, the PDAC Convention, once again attracted the global professional community to Toronto at the beginning of March. The event focuses on minerals including critical raw materials and clearly shows the growing global interest in natural resources as well as the strengthening of international cooperation in this field. The trade show was therefore attended by a record number of more than 32,000 visitors and over 1,300 exhibitors, the highest in its history.
The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Toronto represented the Czech Republic at the Convention primarily with the goal to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Canadian partners. The team met with the officials of the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, which are significant players in the areas of uranium, fossil fuels, and critical raw materials. The CRMs dominate the global race to increase self-sufficiency in battery production as well as in the defense and automotive industries.
Opportunities for cooperation between the Czech Republic and Canada exist in several areas, including geological exploration, supply of Czech companies’ engineering products, environmental solutions, and research projects. A successful example of such efforts is the company Tescan, which manufactures a large portion of the world’s production of electron microscopes in the Czech city Brno. Tescan’s automated mineralogy solution, TIMA, is already used in a number of Canadian laboratories and companies, which is why the company once again exhibited at the Convention.
The Czech Republic was represented at the trade show within the joint European Union pavilion, where Czech companies and associations also received spotlight. The EU also promoted the CRM strategic projects, with the Czech strategic project of manganese recovery from tailings in Chvaletice also presented at the Convention. Mangan Chvaletice is also interesting due to its Canadian footprint, as its owner company Euro Manganese is headquartered in British Columbia. Critical raw materials overall will continue to represent an important opportunity for cooperation with Canada, as well as for investment within the European Union.
