Why demography matters

Fertility decline, longer lives, migration, population growth or shrinkage, and profound ageing are reshaping services,
labor markets, housing, education and public finances. Demography turns these dynamics into evidence for effective
development management.

Why now

Many countries face a shortage of qualified demographers, while opportunities for higher education in this field remain limited. The result is strong and durable career prospects across government, academia, NGOs and international organizations, as well as consultancy, analytics and marketing, and major consumer-facing industries.

Programme at a glance

 

Charles University - Hybrid Master´s Degree Programme in Demography (JPG, 65 KB)

• Hybrid study: distance learning plus classroom-based practical training in Prague
• Study mix: about 50% guided self-study (repository-based materials), about 25% contact teaching, and about 25%
independent master's thesis work
• Annual four-week training camp in Prague: hands-on training and consultations
• Entry requirements: bachelor's (or higher) degree and English proficiency at B1+
• Entrance interview/exam online in May 2026
• Developed with UNFPA within our long-term implementation partnership on population and development
• Delivered by Charles University's Department of Demography and Geodemography after nearly 40 years of accredited teaching of Demography at all three levels of higher education and a four-year pilot of the Master´s Degree Programme in combined form
