"European childhood" - European Night of Literature

On September 12, 2024, the European Night of Literature took place at Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv, celebrating the best of contemporary European literature. This year’s theme, European Childhood, focused on stories from 11 countries, each exploring different aspects of growing up in Europe. The featured works, written by renowned authors, reflected on societal changes, family challenges, and nostalgic memories.

Representing the Czech Republic, author Simona Bohatá presented her book Máňa a my druzí. Born in Prague in 1965 and raised in the Žižkov neighborhood, Bohatá has a unique voice in Czech literature. After completing secondary school, she studied text and screenwriting at the conservatory and worked in various fields, including a travel agency, the National Library, and private companies.

Before becoming a published author, Bohatá wrote privately for many years. Her first book, Máňa a my druzí (2017), captured her childhood and adolescence in Žižkov. She followed it with the novella Všichni sou trapný (2019), and then with the novel Klikař Beny (2021), which was nominated for the prestigious Magnesia Litera Award. Her most recent work, the short story collection Cowardly Heroes (2023), has also received wide recognition. Some of her short stories were featured by Czech Radio. In addition, she co-authored The Book of Prague (2023), an anthology of Czech short stories published in the UK, and contributed to the anthology Krvavý Žižkov.

The event in Tel Aviv provided an opportunity for attendees to explore Bohatá's work in more detail, as well as to enjoy an evening of European literary talent. The European Night of Literature successfully brought together a wide range of audiences, who appreciated the diversity of literary works and the engaging atmosphere of the event.
