Ambassador David Král visited Tartu and Viljandi earlier this week. This time, the visits focused in particular on establishing and strengthening links in the field of cultural cooperation.
The first day of the two-day visit, 2 May, was spent mainly in Tartu. First, a meeting with Kristiina Tõnnisson, Head of the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies took place in the University of Tartu. She introduced the institute's activities, curriculas and organization. The embassy has already had good contact with the University of Tartu in organizing various exhibitions, but the next step is Ambassador Král planning to give a guest lecture on foreign policy to students of the Skytte Institute already in the upcoming autumn semester. The next meeting took place in Tartu City Government with Mayor Urmas Klaas and Head of Foreign Relations Iris Allorg. The co-operation projects within the framework of the European Capital of Culture Tartu2024 were discussed, as well as, how to bring together Estonian and Czech startup companies and small producers.
The second day of the visit, 3 May, was dedicated to Viljandi. The first meeting of the day was aimed at getting acquainted with the local company Tactical Foodpack, which produces healthy and delicious camping food. The company's founder, Sverre Puustusmaa, talked about the birth of the brand, and sales manager Henri Paavo introduced the products and production. As the company's representatives themselves have pointed out, they are a good example that a successful company can be started up and developed in smaller towns as well, it does not require moving to Tallinn or Tartu.
The second meeting of the day took place in the town hall with with Helmen Kütt, Chairman of Viljandi Town Council, and Kristjan Mändmaa, Vice Mayor. Representatives of the embassy were received very warmly, and the whole meeting was very substantive and interesting - the town of Viljandi and its nature were introduced in both historical and contemporary contexts. The experience in the field of culture and education, as well as the war in Ukraine and the refugee situation were discussed. During the meeting, it was repeatedly underlined that Estonia and the Czech Republic have a lot in common. The partners agreed it would be worthwhile to identify a twin city for Viljandi in Czechia with whom the latter could cooperate, for example in the field of culture and education. There are already some thoughts in that regard, hopefully to be implemented soon.
The day ended with an opening of the exhibition "Czech Castles and Chateaux" in the Old Water Tower of Viljandi, co-organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Sakala Center. The exhibition features 15 of the most interesting fortresses and castles in two historical regions of the Czech Republic - Bohemia and Moravia. In his opening speech, the Ambassador expressed his gratitude for finding such a suitable venue for the exhibition. After all, the water tower is one of the symbols of Viljandi, and the beautiful views from the tower together with the Czech castles form a harmonious whole. It was nice to see that many people from Viljandi and the farthest part of the country had gathered for the opening. We believe that the exhibition offers not only an aesthetic experience and information, but also a reason to visit castles and chateaux and thus the Czech Republic. The exhibition will remain open until 12 June.
