Czechoslovakia established mutual relations with Estonia shortly after its founding. Czechoslovakia recognized Estonia de jure on 29 December 1921, and in the same year, a Czechoslovak consulate began operating in Tallinn. In 1924, Josef Beck was appointed as the first Honorary Consul of Estonia in Prague, and three years later, in 1927, both countries appointed their first Ambassadors – Václav Girsa and Otto Strandman (both resided in Warsaw). In 1928, the Consulate in Tallinn was upgraded to an Embassy, and in 1929 a visa-free regime entered into force. Relations continued to develop until 1939, when they were interrupted by the occupation of Czechoslovakia and the subsequent Soviet annexation of Estonia following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
After the fall of communist regimes and the restoration of Estonian independence, diplomatic relations were officially renewed on 9 September 1991. In 1994, the first Ambassador of the independent Czech Republic, Dana Huňátová, presented her credentials to President Lennart Meri, and a year later Estonian Ambassador Toivo Tasa presented his credentials in Prague. A major milestone was the opening of embassies in Tallinn (2000, and newly in 2004) and in Prague (1998, and newly in 2022). The joining of both countries in the European Union in 2004 and in the Schengen Area in 2007 further deepened their cooperation. Today, Czechia and Estonia as allies within NATO closely cooperate in security, political, economic, and cultural fields – among other things, through the participation of the Czech Armed Forces in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission – and continue to develop friendly and partnership relations.
