Foreign Affairs Committee of the Czech Chamber of Deputies visits Tallinn

As part of their tour of the Baltic capitals, four members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech Parliament, visited Tallinn on 24 and 25 May 2022. The delegation was headed by Mr Marek Ženíšek, the chairman of the Committee.

During their visit, the delegation met with a variety of stakeholders. The initial meeting was at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where deputies were received by the Secretary General Ambassador Jonatan Vseviov. The meeting focused mainly on the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the support that both Estonia and Czech Republic are providing to Ukraine in this conflict, as well as other related issues, such as the 6th sanctions package and energy security. The issue of the application of Sweden and Finland to join NATO and the upcoming Madrid summit also resonated strongly. Mr Ženíšek also highlighted the fact that the visit of the Baltic countries is the first trip of the newly constituted Foreign Affairs Committee after the 2021 general elections, which underlines the close relations and like-mindedness in foreign policy between Czechia and the three nations.

After the MFA, the delegation paid a visit to the Office of Government, where they met the National Security Advisor, Mr Indrek Sirp. Topics discussed were similar to those in the previous meeting and Mr Sirp explained especially the Estonian Prime Minister´s perspective on the issues at stake.

In the evening the delegation was treated to an informal dinner by the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament), Mr Marko Mihkelson. The meeting continued the next day by an exchange in Riigikogu. Mr Mihkelson explained the main priorities of the Committee in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine and underlined a strong consensus among Estonian political parties in that regard. The Czech delegation had also an opportunity to enlighten their Estonian counterparts with regard to the upcoming Czech presidency of the EU and its likely course of action, including the ambition to organize a donor conference on Ukraine and EU – Ukraine summit.

At the end of the visit, Czech delegation also had a chance to exchange their views on some of the key issues of international relations with the analysts of the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS), the leading foreign policy think-tank in Estonia. They also visited the e-Estonia briefing centre where they listened to the presentation of the success story of this Estonian flagship initiative, as well as the Czech Embassy in Tallinn.
