Driving a Vehicle in the Czech Republic - General Rules

The following documents are accepted as a proof of the holder‘s entitlement to drive motor vehicles in the Czech Republic:
 

  • - valid national driving licence issued in the Czech Republic
  • - valid national driving licence issued in another EU Member State
  • - valid driving permit issued in a foreign country in accordance with the Convention on Road Traffic (Vienna 1968) or the Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva 1949)
  • - international driving permit issued in a foreign country in accordance with the Convention on Road Traffic (Vienna 1968) – valid in the Czech Republic for three years from the date of issue
  • - international driving permit issued in accordance with the Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva 1949) – valid in the Czech Republic for one year from the date of issue

Every person granted a permanent residence in the Czech Republic or a temporary residence for longer period than 1 year is obliged to have their driving licence issued abroad in accordance with the Convention on Road Traffic exchanged for a Czech driving licence within 3 months after their residence was issued.
 

Holders of Taiwanese Documents:

Even though Taiwan is a not party to any agreement mentioned above and therefore Taiwanese driving licences are not acknowledged by the Czech Republic, their holders staying in the Czech Republic for a short period of time (not trespassing 1 year) may use them. Every Taiwanese driver‘s licence holder wishing to drive a vehicle in the Czech Republic has to obtain an international driver‘s licence in Taiwan, which can be used only together with national Taiwanese license.

Long-term residents are required to obtain a Czech driving licence in standard manner (taking the exams). Taiwanese driving licence cannot be exchanged for a Czech one.
