
A visit of the Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka in Stockholm

Between November 3 and 4, the Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka visited Sweden at the invitation of the Swedish PM Stefan Löfven. He was accompanied by a large business delegation.
First part of his program was a meeting with the Swedish PM. They discussed especially bilateral Czech-Swedish cooperation and possibilities of its deepening. The main topics were strengthening of economic relation. They spoke about current issues of the European integration and human rights as well.
The PMs also issued a joint statement (see the attachment), in which they highlighted the importance of effective cooperation in the EU. They agreed that it is important to support function of the EU, which guarantees stable, prosperous and safe Europe. In the context of upcoming withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU, they came to an agreement on several important issues that deserve enhanced cooperation.
After the meeting with Stefan Löfven the PM Bohuslav Sobotka participated in a Czech-Swedish business seminar at The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) focused on energetics where he evaluated economic relations between the countries. During the afternoon he also managed to meet with the representatives of the Council of Nordic Trade Unions and Swedish unions SACO, TCO and LO together with Josef Středula, the head of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions.
Afterwards the PM encountered Czech compatriots and students in Sweden. He thanked them for the representation of the Czech Republic abroad. He also received a present from the Czech community.
Thursday evening, a reception on the occasion of the National Day of the Czech Republic was held. Among other things, several objects which belonged to Emma Destinnová were handed over to the PM by brothers Kaj and Ronny Schueler that will be donated to the Czech Museum of Music.
On Friday morning, the PM had a breakfast with prominent Czech compatriots and later he also met the Czech businessmen established in Sweden. In the afternoon, the PM visited Karolinska Insitutet, a leading medical university and a research centre in Stockholm which closely cooperates with CEITEC Brno. A part of the institute is a newly built hospital Nya Karolinska. An exclusive supplier of innovative beds, not only for Nya Karolinska but also for other hospitals in the Stockholm region, is the Czech company Linet. The PM had an opportunity to see their products too.
At the Stockholm Town Hall, the PM met the President of the Stockholm City Council, Mrs. Eva-Louise Erlandsson Slorach and he spoke with her about contemporary topics which concern both Stockholm and Czech cities, such as available housing, public transport, cooperation between European cities and the concept of the Smart Cities. The Czech PM also met State Secretary on the Swedish Ministry of Defense Jan Salestrand for a luncheon and discussed further strengthening of the Czech-Swedish defense cooperation and the current challenges to European security and defense policy. Last but not least, the PM paid tribute to the memory of the former Swedish PM Olof Palme. He laid a wreath on the grave of this important Swedish politician who tragically died 30 years ago.
