Dr. Nikola Schmidt, Czech researcher and head of the Centre for Governance of Emerging Technologies at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, made an appearance at the Gothenburg Science Festival 2025. His talk focused on the current issue of planetary defence and humanity’s preparedness for a potential asteroid impact.
About the event: In 2024, the probability of Earth colliding with asteroid YR2024 increased to 3.1 %. Although the risk was subsequently reduced to below 1 %, this incident has sparked a fundamental debate: Are we ready to face a similar threat?
Nikola Schmidt (born 1982) has long been involved in space security, climate change, and emerging technologies. In his talk, he outlined strategies and scenarios that could be used in planetary defense. Schmidt had participated in a NASA-funded planetary defense project at the International Space University in 2015 and later in a four-year project, funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR), which focused on developing planetary defense and space mining strategies for the Czech Republic.
