As part of the Timeless Festival 2024, the Czech Centre Stockholm will host a screening of the legendary sci-fi film Ikarie XB 1 by Jindřich Polák at the Zita Cinema on August 29, 2024. This film, inspired by the novel by Stanisław Lem, is one of the iconic works of Czechoslovak cinema.
"It is the second half of the 22nd century, and the spaceship Ikarie XB 1 is on its way to Alpha Centauri to explore alien life forms. Its crew, composed of scientific experts from various fields, is far from the solar system and faces unknown, unimaginable threats. Yet, they also carry with them their everyday human concerns and joys. Kališ's black-and-white images in widescreen format, Liška's innovative electronic music, and convincing sets and costumes create a stylistically refined fictional world of the distant future. The understated performances by the Czech acting elite lend the film unexpected naturalness and psychological depth." Source ČSFD.
As part of the 9th edition of the Timeless Festival in Stockholm, we invite you to experience this iconic sci-fi drama by Jindřich Polák, whose screenplay was co-written with Pavel Juráček. The Timeless Festival screens newly restored classics and anniversary films, creating a space for new perspectives and connections.
The authors were loosely inspired by Stanisław Lem’s novel The Magellanic Cloud when writing the screenplay. It is worth noting that they resisted the temptation to politicize the genre, which was common at the time. Instead of pitting two competing systems against each other, with an imaginary East and West, they presented hope for a better, morally superior humanity and the "riffraff" of the 20th century, who left behind only destruction.
A short discussion will follow the film screening.
