Metro train units manufactured in the Czech Republic by SKODA GROUP began regular service in the afternoon of May 22, 2026, on Lines 1, 2, and 3 of the Sofia underground. Their deployment will contribute to greater passenger comfort and the further development of public transport in the Bulgarian capital, where they will gradually replace Russian/Soviet-made units that have been in operation for more than 30 years.
The Bulgarian transport operator Metropolitan EAD ordered a total of eight four-car train units, seven of which have already been delivered in accordance with the agreed schedule. Skoda Group signed the contract for the new metro trains with the Sofia City Municipality in 2023, with the total value of the contract reaching approximately CZK 1.6 billion (around EUR 66 million).
The new train units underwent significant adaptation for operation in the Sofia underground, including adjustments for partially above-ground use, installation of a more powerful air-conditioning system, new passenger information systems, and features supporting more efficient use of electric energy. Each train is 80 meters long and reaches a maximum operating speed of 90 km/h. The vehicles offer 156 seats and a total capacity of up to 762 passengers. The renewal of the rolling stock will therefore increase transport capacity as well as comfort in everyday travel.
The project also represents another example of successful economic cooperation between the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The involvement of a Czech manufacturer in the development of transport infrastructure in Sofia confirms the long-standing trade relations between the two countries as well as the ability of Czech industry to succeed in international markets.
