On the evening of 20 October 2026, the Alma Alter Student Theatre at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski hosted a commemorative event marking the 90th anniversary of the birth of Václav Havel, former Czech President, writer, playwright and leading figure of the anti-communist dissident movement.
The programme, skilfully moderated by Metodi Metodiev, a historian and expert on modern Czech history, opened with a screening of Václav Havel (2025), a documentary directed by Igor Chaun as part of the Czech Television series The Greatest Czech. This was followed by a moderated discussion between Petr Pospíchal, a former dissident and close associate of Václav Havel, who later became the first Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Bulgaria, and Stefan Tafrov, former secretary to President Zhelyu Zhelev and a prominent Bulgarian journalist and diplomat.
The commemorative evening dedicated to Václav Havel was jointly organised by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Sofia, the Cultural Centre of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, the non-profit organisation Sofia Discussion Forum and the Czech expatriate organisation Bohemia Club. This unique opportunity was made possible thanks to the generous support from the PPF Group.
A recording of the entire evening is available at this link.
