On 11 and 12 April, Mr Martin Kupka, Minister of Transport of the Czech Republic, visited Singapore, focusing on cooperation in the field of modern transport technologies, space activities and the development of direct air links between Prague and the Southeast Asian region. Together with the delegation of the Minister of Transport, nearly 60 representatives of companies from the Czech Chamber of Commerce came to establish contacts with local companies at a business forum. The Minister's mission then continued to South Korea.
Commenting on the mission, Minister Kupka said that "the Southeast Asian region represents a region of great opportunities for our entrepreneurs. I am therefore pleased that we have managed to organise the largest economic diplomacy mission of the Ministry of Transport to this region. We have supported more than 50 companies to make important business contacts in two successful and rapidly developing Asian economies."
"Both Singapore and South Korea are very progressive countries and there are many modern business methods to learn. We are therefore very pleased that the Minister of Transport could be accompanied on his trip by a delegation of nearly 60 businesspeople from the Chamber of Commerce," said Michal Štefl, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce.
The focus of the visit to Singapore was therefore on creating connections between Czech and Singaporean companies. After Minister Kupka held talks with his government counterpart, Minister of Finance and Transport Chee Hong Tat, the two jointly launched the Czech-Singapore Business Forum, which was attended by representatives of more than a hundred local entities. Singapore can be a gateway for our businesses to enter the Southeast Asian market," Minister Kupka said at the start of the business forum. The business forum was financed by the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic from the Fund for Economic Diplomacy and co-organised by the Czech Embassy in Singapore and the Chamber of Commerce of the Czech Republic with the help of the Czech-Singapore Chamber of Commerce.
After arriving in Singapore, Minister Kupka visited the local seaport, through which 37.5 million shipping containers (TEUs) passed in 2022, making it the second largest container port in the world. On Wednesday, Minister Kupka then began his day with a meeting with Singapore Airlines executives. The main topic was the possibility of direct air routes between Prague and the countries of Southeast Asia. "Prague Airport is an important transport hub for flights from Asia to Europe and beyond. In recent months, we have managed to re-establish a regular air route between Prague and Seoul and introduce a new route to Taipei. We would be pleased if in the coming years we could also expand the opportunities for Czech tourists and businesspeople to Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania. We have received a promise from the management of Singapore Airlines that they will explore the possibility of further direct connections," said Minister Kupka. At the end of the trip, Minister Kupka also discussed cooperation in the field of space activities with the Executive Director of the Office for Space Technology & Industry Singapore.
