Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg, has died

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Shanghai informs with profound sorrow that former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg, passed away on 11 November 2023 at the age of 85 years.

Karel Schwarzenberg was born in 1937 in Prague. In 1948, his entire family went to Austria, where he later studied law in Vienna and Graz, as well as forestry in Munich, Germany. In 1990, he returned to his homeland, where he worked until 1992 as Chancellor of President Václav Havel.

He first got involved in high politics in 2004, when he became a senator. Later he was a Member of Parliament and twice Foreign Minister in the years 2007-2009 and 2010-2013, while also holding the position of Deputy Prime Minister in the period 2010-2013.
