International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. On this day UN Women starts its annual campaign „Orange the World“. This year's motto of the Day Against Violence Against Women is "UNITE! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls".

According to the latest global surveys published by the WHO (more in the document below), almost 1 in 3 women over the age of 15 have been exposed to physical or sexual violence whether by an intimate partner or another person. The surveys lead to a bleak conclusion that the worldwide situation has not changed much in the last 10 years. Furthermore, the results do not yet reflect the reality associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the rights of women and girls, together with the support of democracy, continue to be among the core objectives of the Czech Republic's foreign policy. In accordance with the Concept of Human Rights Support and Transformational Cooperation, the Czech Republic supports equal opportunities for women and men in international organizations and actively opposes violence against women and girls, including sexual violence in armed conflicts, at meetings of the UN and other international organizations. In this regard, the Czech Republic also supports the activities of UN WOMEN and contributes to the fulfillment of EU guidelines on violence against women and girls and the fight against all forms of discrimination against them. As part of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council, the Czech Republic formulates, among other things, recommendations focused on sexual abuse and trafficking in women, gender discrimination, the eradication of female circumcision, or the fight against sexual and gender-based violence, including domestic violence.

In 2023, within the framework of the 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Czech Republic actively supported the adoption of resolutions to combat violence against women (Violence against women, with a focus on criminally detained women) and forced marriages (Child, early and forced marriage). The Czech Republic also supported the adoption of Realization of the equal enjoyment of the right to education by every girl. At the 54th UN Human Rights Council, the Czech Republic co-sponsored a resolution on Preventable maternal mortality and morbidity and human rights. At the 3rd Committee of the UN Security Council, the Czech Republic supports the resolution to improve the situation of women and girls in rural areas (Improvement of the situation of women and girls in rural areas).
