After a long time, the Czech Philharmonic has returned to China, represented by a musical quartet accompanied by General Director David Mareček. The Czech musicians are currently on a concert tour across seven Chinese cities, including Shanghai and Beijing. The tour serves as an opportunity to reconnect with previous contacts, reintroduce themselves to local audiences, and establish new artistic collaborations.
The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Shanghai supported this significant cultural event with its presence. Its representatives met with the ensemble members to discuss future plans and artistic projects.
After nine years, members of the Czech Philharmonic performed in Shanghai again. The musical quartet was accompanied on the piano by General Director David Mareček, with clarinetist Tony Shen as a guest.
The concert took place at the modern Shanghai Poly Theatre, a key venue in the city's new cultural district.
Despite shifts in cultural policy, classical music remains highly popular in China. The concert hall, with a capacity of more than 1,500 seats, was nearly full, confirming the continued strong interest of Chinese audiences in classical music.
The Czech Philharmonic last performed in China in 2016. After a long break, they are now reconnecting with Chinese audiences, and the quartet’s recent concerts suggest that cultural exchange between the two countries still holds great potential.
Beyond Shanghai, Czech musicians will also visit cities such as Suzhou, Changzhou, and Hangzhou, where they will not only perform concerts but also hold masterclasses for students at local conservatories.
