August 21, 1968: Anniversary of the Invasion of Czechoslovakia

We commemorate the tragic anniversary of August 21, 1968. Nearly 30 years after the Munich Agreement and 23 years after the end of Nazi occupation, Czechoslovakia was once again seized by military force. Without the consent of the Czechoslovak government, the country's borders were violently crossed by the armies of five Warsaw Pact countries, led by the Soviet Union.

Freedom should never be taken for granted. The anniversary of the 1968 invasion reminds us how quickly freedom can be lost if we fail to uphold the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
