Discussion on possibilities of cooperation with the Mayor of Beit Sahour

On 2 December 2021, the Head of the Representative Office of the Czech Republic Petr Starý visited the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour. During the meeting, Mayor Jihad Khair presented the history of the town and informed about the ongoing projects and the municipality's plans for the future. Beit Sahour develops international cooperation with forty mostly European cities and is interested in establishing contacts in the Czech Republic as well.

Beit Sahour is one of the few Palestinian towns with a Christian majority and part of the so-called Christian Triangle, which includes towns with significant Christian population and historical or religious significance - Bethlehem, Beit Jala and Beit Sahour. According to the legend, the shepherds were staying here when the Angel appeared and announced them the birth of Jesus. Tourism therefore plays an important role in the city's economy, and the municipality tries to promote it by organising festivals and renovating historic buildings in the city centre. Traditional handicrafts are of great importance as well, in particular production of olive wood objects. The town is also active in promoting community life and young people. The Representative Office of the Czech Republic has already cooperated with Beit Sahour in the past, supporting economic opportunities for local women as a part of small-scale projects appeal, or organising a Master Classes for students of the local conservatory.
