UN Human Rights Council Opens Its 63rd Session

On 7 September, the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) opens its 63rd regular session, which will run until 7 October. As an EU Member State, the Czech Republic will present three resolutions addressing human rights situations in specific countries: Afghanistan, Burundi, and Russia. For the first time, the resolution on Russia will be tabled on behalf of all EU Member States. In total, more than 30 additional resolutions are expected to be presented during the session.

In the negotiations, the Czech Republic will focus in particular on resolutions concerning the human rights situations in Russia and Georgia, as well as on issues related to the development of digital technologies and their impact on human rights. A cross-cutting priority for the Czech Republic across all negotiations will be the ongoing process of rationalizing the Human Rights Council’s agenda.

The Czech Republic will deliver several national statements in the Council’s plenary meetings on priority issues, including the human rights situations in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, as well as the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the adoption of key international human rights treaties. The Czech Republic will also present the traditional joint statement of the Slavkov Format countries on combating antisemitism, which this year will focus on artificial intelligence.

Together with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Permanent Mission will organize a side event on equal participation in elections in the context of developing digital technologies. The event will be opened by Ambassador Karel Beran.
