Joint Event of the Permanent Mission with WMO, UNDRR, and African Partners Focused on Digital Technologies in Disaster Risk Reduction

On Thursday, September 5, a joint event of the Czech Republic with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and African partners took place in Geneva, focusing on digital technologies in disaster risk reduction (DRR).

The integration of disaster risk reduction with digital technologies is a key priority for the Czech Permanent Mission, as emphasized by the Czech Republic's Permanent Representative, V. Bálek, in his opening speech. The Czech Republic aims to use simple, easily transferable digital technologies that can prevent disasters and save lives. The speakers participating with opening remarks at the event were UNDRR Special Representative K. Kishore, the WMO Deputy Secretary-General K. Barrett, and the Permanent Representative of Ethiopia T. K. Daka.

The discussion highlighted the need to integrate (new) technologies with DRR, and the practically focused seminar demonstrated specific digital solutions used to prevent disasters. At the seminar, the Czech Republic was represented by Jan Daňhelka, Director of Hydrology at the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), who presented the Flash Flood Indicator, a new application used in the Czech Republic that can be easily replicated worldwide.
