The Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) met from 9 to 13 October. During the general debate, the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic Václav Bálek took the floor to begin by condemning the terrorist attacks in Israel and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Furthermore, the Czech representative mentioned in his speech that his country is one of the largest hosts of Ukrainian refugees per capita. Since the beginning of the Russian war, 60 million euro have been allocated for humanitarian and stabilization efforts.
Despite the alarming situation in Ukraine, we must not forget the large-scale humanitarian crises outside the European continent. Over the past decade, the Czech efforts in cooperation with UNHCR have provided humanitarian aid to displaced populations worth more than 20 million euro, including in countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Mali, Niger, Pakistan and Syria. Half a million euro are on the way to help Armenia.
