The UN Human Rights Council concluded its 56th session, which ran from 18 June to 12 July 2024. During the last week, the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic delivered a national address on the situation in Ukraine in an interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights. In his speech, he addressed the impact of the Russian aggression in Ukraine on civilian infrastructure, as well as the treatment of civilians detained in the occupied territories or Ukrainian soldiers in Russian captivity.
Czechia made a total of 12 speeches on Afghanistan, Myanmar, Belarus, Venezuela, violence against women and girls, peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and new technologies in the context of human rights. Two speeches were prepared and delivered in collaboration with young women delegates to the UN.
At the end of the session, the Council adopted 25 resolutions, of which only three were adopted by vote. These were a resolution on the situation of human rights in Eritrea and resolutions on international cooperation in the field of human rights and on human rights and international solidarity. The Council adopted by consensus a resolution on Myanmar and on technical assistance and cooperation with Colombia, as well as thematic resolutions on women's rights and gender issues, on human rights and climate change, on the right to education, or on peaceful protests. The latter resolution is one of the main human rights priorities of Czechia, as is the right to freedom of assembly, on which Czechia organised a side event on the sidelines of the Council.
The Council appoints a new Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and members of working groups on transnational business corporations and the use of mercenaries.
