Czechia supported the Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council on Myanmar

The Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council about “the human rights implications of the crisis in Myanmar” was held on 12 February. Czechia presented a national statement and supported the joint EU statement.

Altogether, 68 states, UNICEF and 11 non-governmental organizations participated in the Session. The Deputy UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif and the Special Rapporteur Thomas Andrews briefied the Council about the critical situation in the country and made recommendations.

Following the debate, the Council adopted a consensual resolution on the situation. It calls for the restoration of the civilian government; the immediate release of the President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other detained persons; lifting of the state of emergency; protection of the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and association, including enabling activities of the civil society and media; immediate lifting of internet, telecommunications and social media restrctions; humanitarian access and continued focus on the Rohingyas.

At the 46th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, beginning on 22 February, the EU will present a traditional annual resolution on Myanmar, which will build upon the Special Session.
