HRC 48: Resolution on Equal participation in political and public affairs adopted by the Council

The Human Rights Council on 7 October 2021 adopted the resolution on Equal participation in political and public affairs. The text submitted by Czechia together with Botswana, Indonesia Peru and the Netherlands, and co-sponsored by more than 60 other countries, focuses on the exercise of the right to participate in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic recovery.

The resolution recognizes the importance of genuine periodic elections and condemns any manipulation of election processes. It also underlines the significant role of civil society and human rights defenders on public life. The draft was once again adopted by consensus, as was the case of all previous resolutions on this topic submitted by the core group lead by Czechia at the Human Rights Council in previous years.

Czechia has been promoting the issue of participation in public affairs for years. This authentic interest in the topic is based on our own historical experience from the period when the right to participate could not be freely exercised.
