Czech Youth Delegates at the UN

In June, the Youth Delegates of the Czech Republic to the United Nations participated in the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. During their stay, they completed a work program focused on the UN and took part in the Council’s proceedings

In their statements at the Human Rights Council, they brought the perspective of the younger generation on key contemporary issues. Terezie Hiclová focused on freedom of expression in the digital space. Jakub Rychlý highlighted the negative impact of algorithms and addictive design on education. Petr Balvín emphasized that the climate crisis is also a human rights crisis, as it threatens the environment and deepens social inequalities.

The young delegates also participated in the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment, which addressed the transition from humanitarian aid to development and the idea of a humanitarian reset, as well as in the Executive Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Their Geneva program included meetings with representatives from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), and briefings with NGOs such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR). Some activities were carried out jointly with fellow youth delegates from Poland and Finland.

With the support of the Permanent Mission, the delegates also organized their own side event, which opened a discussion on how disinformation threatens the rights of young people in the digital environment.

The Youth Delegate Program aims to ensure that the voice of the younger generation is heard within the United Nations. At the same time, it seeks to bring the UN’s agenda closer to young people in the Czech Republic and foster their interest in global affairs.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic as part of its activities supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
