50th Anniversary of Czech Language Teaching in Sheffield

On September 26, the University of Sheffield marked the 50th anniversary of Czech language teaching in the presence of the Czech Consul General. The afternoon workshop was attended not only by current students and academic staff but also by a number of successful alumni who had studied Czech during their time in Sheffield.

Among them were James Wilson from Leeds and Joanna Szostek from Glasgow, whose presentations focused both on the linguistic perspective of contemporary Czech and on the broader context of studying less commonly taught languages within the civilizational and social framework of Central and Eastern Europe. Other successful alumni took part in follow-up discussion panels, sharing their experiences of how studying Czech influenced their professional careers and, to some extent, their personal lives as well.

The event, made possible in part thanks to the support of the Czech foreign service, clearly demonstrated that Czech language teaching in Sheffield, besides having a rich past, also has a promising future. This is due above all to the dedication of the local teaching staff—especially Professor Neil Bermel and Czech language lecturer Luděk Knittl—who, in connection with the 50th anniversary, received a message of thanks from the President of the Czech Republic for their long-standing work. Thanks to their efforts, Czech continues to thrive in Sheffield even today, despite the broader unfavorable climate for less commonly taught languages at British universities.
