Consul General David Frous visited the Isle of Man on 25 and 26 April. On this occasion, he met with the island’s Lieutenant Governor, John Lorimer, who represents His Majesty King Charles III in this Crown Dependency, and held talks with members of the local government, including Chief Minister Alfred Cannan. This marked the first-ever joint working visit by representatives of selected EU Member States represented within the Manchester consular corps.
In addition to addressing practical matters related to the lives of EU citizens on the island and issues some of them have recently faced when crossing borders, discussions with Chief Minister Cannan focused on the prospects for the Isle of Man’s future economic development. In this respect, the island is dealing with challenges similar to those faced by many other European territories. These include rising energy prices, partly linked to the current geopolitical situation, as well as broader demographic challenges—most notably an ageing population.
The openness of the local government to clearly targeted cooperation with foreign partners, whether businesses or individual professionals in high-demand sectors, provides a solid foundation for strengthening relations with European partners, including the Czech Republic.
