Return of freedom nad democracy remembered in the North of Great Britain

The fall of communism in November 1989 was remembered by a week-long mid-November series of events in a number of locations in the North. From Manchester and Sheffield to Glasgow and Edinburgh memories were shared and discussed not just by Czech expatriots by also by local supporters of all things Czech.

Glasgow, Manchester, and Sheffield saw special screenings of Václav Havel’s film Odcházení followed by talks with Doubravka Svobodová, the former Director of Prague theatre Na zábradlí, and Czech actor Josef Polášek. The events were put together by the Consulate General and local academics and students, with the support of the Czech School and Community Centre Manchester. The guests from Prague shared their memories of the revolutionary days and their encounters with Václav Havel and also engaged with audiences on Havel’s unique cinematographic piece. Czech School and Community Centre Manchester presented a successful multimedia performance of Václav Havel´s iconic play Audience by the local amateur dramatic troupe T.G.M. In Salford, the first floor at the King´s Arms turned into an impromptu “museum“ to the revolutionary events. In this atmosphere, guests from near and far could appreciate the culinary creations of the local expatriates. In Edinburgh, Czech School Scotland put together a topical quiz treasure hunt for children and adults on the eve of the 35th anniversary.
