On Sunday, 7 September 2025, a memorial to honor Czechoslovak RAF pilot František Hekel was unveiled on the shore of Loch Doon in Scotland. It marks the location where he crashed in his Spitfire on 25 October 1941.
The unveiling was followed by wreathlaying and dedication of the monument.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the Chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Markéta Pekarová Adamová. Defense Minister Jana Černochová, Senator Vladimíra Ludková, Czech Ambassador Václav Bartuška, Consul General David Frous, and a large delegation from the Czech Ministry of Defense and the General Staff were also present. Numerous Scottish participants attended, including Lords lieutenants for Ayrshire and Arran and for Dumfries, members of the House of Commons, RAF officers, county councilors, and other regional and local government representatives. Braving the weather, a large group of local citizens and media representatives also attended the ceremony.
The act of unveiling was preceded by a flyby of a historic Lancaster bomber at Loch Doon on Saturday. An afteroon-long series of talks and presentations was held at the community center in nearby Dalmellington. The programme focused on the historical context, specifically Lieutenant Hekel, the discovery and recovery of the aircraft's wreck, and the creation of the memorial.
