On to the initiative of the General Consulate and the local Czech school and community centre, Czech language and the Czechia as such were presented at Manchester’s Central Library in the city centre on the occasion of International Mother Language Day. In the afternoon on 21 February, visitors to the celebration of selected mother languages spoken in the capital of the North West had the opportunity to explore the intricacies and curiosities of the Czech language.
Teachers from the Czech Saturday School, Pavla Matásková and Irena Gajdošík, introduced attendees to Czech linguistic culture and even helped them tackle some selected Czech tongue twisters. The language games were a great success not only among children, who were rewarded with traditional Czech sweets for mastering the tricky phrase Strč prst skrz krk (“Put your finger through your throat”), but also among adults. Visitors could also browse a historical Czech reading book or be enticed to visit Czechia thanks to promotional materials provided by CzechTourism.
International Mother Language Day has been observed worldwide for a quarter of a century, initiated by UNESCO. Czech has been showcased in Manchester for the first time in this context, appearing alongside languages such as Greek, Lithuanian, Romanian, Hungarian, and several non-European languages.
