On Monday, 14 July 2025, Prime Minister Petr Fiala met with his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, in Downing Street, London. The two prime ministers signed a memorandum confirming both countries' commitment to strengthening their nuclear energy partnership, and discussed trade and investment promotion, defence cooperation, and providing further assistance to Ukraine. During his visit, Prime Minister Fiala also visited the MI6 headquarters and met with his compatriots. He also awarded three prominent figures from the Czech diaspora with the Karel Kramář Medal.
According to Prime Minister Fiala, the meeting in Downing Street confirmed that relations between our countries are excellent, and that despite the UK's departure from the EU, we remain firm allies who share responsibility for stability and security in Europe. The prime ministers signed a memorandum confirming the shared commitment of both countries to strengthening their partnership in the nuclear energy sector.
"Nuclear power has great potential for the years to come, as it is experiencing a renaissance. I am particularly pleased that CEZ and Rolls-Royce are working together to develop and manufacture small modular reactors. This will greatly benefit the Czech and British economies and create jobs. We share the same vision for the future of energy as the UK, and we have a very similar plan to our British colleagues. We believe that a combination of large nuclear power stations, small modular reactors and renewables is ideal. I believe that cooperating with the UK will help us ensure energy security and affordability for future generations, which is a priority for our government," said Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
Building on the Joint Communication on Cooperation in Nuclear Energy from November 2023, the Memorandum expands joint activities to include project preparation and construction of nuclear power plants, as well as education, research and development. The two countries intend to collaborate on large nuclear power plants and small modular reactors. The aim is also to promote industrial and innovation partnerships, as well as the involvement of Czech and British companies in projects in both countries. Thanks to the memorandum, a unique training centre could be established in the Czech Republic. Rolls-Royce SMR of the UK is also exploring the possibility of building a module factory in the Czech Republic.
The leaders also discussed ways to strengthen trade cooperation. 'I went to the UK to promote trade — there are many opportunities for our companies. Exports to the UK have been growing for a long time. The Czech Prime Minister added: "Prime Minister Starmer and I also met with Czech businessmen who invest in the UK, and I am convinced that there is great scope for developing cooperation." Further support for Ukraine and a common position towards Russia were also key topics of the meeting.
During his visit to London, the Prime Minister awarded the Karel Kramář Medal to three prominent figures from the Czech community. Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines received the medal in recognition of her lifelong efforts to strengthen Czech-British relations. Jana Nahodilová was honoured for her long-standing support of the Czech community in the United Kingdom, and Zuzana Jungmanová was recognised for her fundamental contribution to the development of Czech education abroad. The Karel Kramář Medal is the highest award given by the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, and is awarded in the form of a commemorative medal.
