Panel debate on the 75th anniversary of the death of president Edvard Beneš

To mark the 75th anniversary of the death of President Edvard Beneš, the Embassy organised a panel debate "President Edvard Beneš - an Unusual Hero in the Times of Upheaval" on Tuesday 12 September.

Five renowned historians - Professor Anita Prazmowska from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, Dr Jakub Beneš from University College London SSEESS, Dr Martin Brown from Richmond American University London and Dr George Edward Scott and Neil Rees took the audience through the most important milestones of Benes' life.

The audience was able to gain a whole new perspective on his role in the formation of Czechoslovakia, his time as First Czechoslovak Republic‘s Foreign Minister, during the Munich Conference and his time as London's Government in Exile, as well as his rapprochement with the Soviet Union at the end of the war and the subsequent communist coup in February 1948. Among the audience, we could also find children of soldiers who fought under President Beneš in the London exile during the WWII, as well as the owners of both of his WWII English residences in Putney and Aston Abbotts. President Edvard Beneš died at the age of 64 on 3 September 1948.
