Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the VE day in Runnymede

On 6 May, the Czech Defence Attaché in London, Brigadier General Vratislav Beran and his Slovakian colleague laid wreaths at the RAF Memorial at Runnymede, where the names of 20,000 pilots and crews who have no known grave are carved on stone tablets

This memorial was erected within sight of Windsor and Heathrow Airport, close to where the famous Magna Carta was signed. It was opened in 1953 by Queen Elizabeth II and is open to the public.

Along with the wreaths of the two servicemen, wreaths were also laid by the Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates (FCAFA), VETERANS - Veterans of War of the Czech Republic and the Kent Battle of Britain Museum. The traditional commemorative event included a tour of the memorial, stopping at the names of (not only) fallen Czechoslovaks and remembering their fates. The stories of those who had to flee several times while defending their homeland in order to fight for the freedom they themselves never got will never be forgotten.
