On Sunday, 15 June 2025, a traditional commemorative event took place in Leamington Spa at the Czechoslovak Memorial Fountain to mark the 83rd anniversary of Operation Anthropoid and the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
The event was attended by representatives of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London, Michal Žižlavský and Brigadier General Vratislav Beran, who laid a wreath of poppies at the memorial.
During the Second World War, the headquarters of the Czechoslovak Free Army in the United Kingdom was based in Leamington Spa. Among those who lived there were Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, who carried out Operation Anthropoid, as well as five other paratroopers who heroically died alongside them on 18 June 1942 in the Church of Saint Cyril and Methodius in Prague during a battle against overwhelming Nazi forces.
The event was organized by the Friends of the Czechoslovak Memorial Fountain and was also attended by representatives of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic, local government officials, members of various veterans’ associations, local MP Matt Western, and veterans of the Czech Army, who flew in specially from Czechia.
The ceremony concluded with the national anthems of the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, and the United Kingdom, performed by children from the Czech and Slovak School of Warwick
