On 25 July 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Lubomír Zaorálek, met the British Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, David Davis, in Prague. They discussed issues related to Brexit.
During the meeting, the Czech Foreign Minister emphasised the continued interest of the Czech Republic in having the highest quality of mutual relations between the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom not only in the period before leaving the EU, but also after the UK leaves the EU.
"The Czech Republic will continue to regard as its priority the preservation of Czech citizens' rights in the UK in such a way that it is not fundamentally limited by Brexit. Similarly, the Czech Republic is interested in maintaining high level relations in other areas, especially economic and security", Minister Zaorálek said after the meeting. These priorities are in line with EU priorities, negotiated with the UK by Michel Barnier for the EU as a whole.
At the same time the ministers discussed the progress and outcome of the first substantive negotiation of the exiting agreement. On leaving, Secretary of State Davis called the meeting in Prague useful, and both ministers agreed that another bilateral meeting could take place in the autumn this year. Minister Zaorálek commented that "The Czech Republic and the United Kingdom remain friends and allies for the future".
