Ambassador visits painter Stan Young

On Monday 26 June 2017, Ambassador Libor Sečka went to Worcester, to pay a visit to 97-year-old British painter Stan Young, the author of the painting “Lidice”. The painting depicts the annihilation of the Czech village of Lidice by the Nazis in 1942. It was made in England at the end of the 1950s, after Mr. Young´s return from the then Czechoslovakia.

Ambassador Sečka was very interested in a closer history of the painting and informed Mr. Young that its owners, the Lowenstein family, decided to donate the painting to the Czech state. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in London has already secured a transfer of the painting to the Czech Republic, where it is undergoing its restoration now. Subsequently, the painting will be handed over to the Lidice Memorial, with the participation of significant guests. Mr. Young was delighted with this information, he believes that his painting Lidice could hardly find a more dignified placement.

At the conclusion of a very pleasant meeting, Ambassador Libor Sečka mentioned that he truly appreciates any similar bond between the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, as it is a symbol of the depth and quality of mutual relations, and he wished Mr. Young a good health and lots of inspiration for the years to come.
