The Czech Republic was among more than 80 co-sponsors of the UN Security Council resolution condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine and safeguarding humanitarian assistance. Due to Russia’s abuse of its veto power the Security Council is blocked in delivering its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The General Assembly must act now.
The resolution was presented in the Security Council on Friday 25 February by the United States and Albania. 11 Member States voted in favor, while China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstained and only the Russian Federation voted against the resolution. This expected step opened the path to convene an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly on Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.
We believe the UN Security Council will take its decision today to call an emergency special session of the UNGA. The Czech Republic fully supports such a session to be convened immediately.
The General Assembly is empowered to make recommendations to States on international issues. Member States must act now and hold Russia accountable for its aggressive actions. Together with Ukraine and other partners we will work to put forward a General Assembly resolution to demand immediate withdrawal of the Russian armed forces and preserving Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
