The informal meeting of ministers of foreign affairs on 14-15 June provided an opportunity for informal and open dialogue. Attention was paid to assistance to Ukraine and setting of the Alliance’s stance towards Russia in the long term. In the context of the upcoming Summit in Madrid, NATO’s new Strategic Concept and adaptation of the Alliance in the political and military domains were discussed. Foreign Ministers from Finland and Sweden joined the working dinner alongside their NATO counterparts.
Minister Lipavský called for preparation of long-term complex policy aimed at “containment” of Russia and defense against its hostile activities across a full range of domains, including the development of defense on the Eastern Flank of the Alliance. The Minister expressed his hope that the reasons for and the means of the political and military strengthening of the Alliance will be thoroughly addressed in NATO’s new Strategic Concept that will be adopted at the NATO Summit in Madrid in June. Minister Lipavský stated that, in addition to the radical change of the security environment and Alliance’s posture in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion, the new Strategic Concept should reflect the emerging threats posed by China in the cyber and technological domains, highlight NATO-EU strategic unity and the importance of cooperation with like-minded partners, especially from the Asia-Pacific region.
