The extraordinary meeting focused on the escalating situation on Ukrainian borders. Ministers agreed on the necessity to discourage possible Russian aggression. They wished to support security and sovereignty of Ukraine and to strengthen security of Allies, should the situation further escalate or should there be an open military conflict.
The Czech Minister Jan Lipavský emphasised the need for Russia to deescalate as a condition to any substantial negotiations. He rejected Russian proposals for legally binding security guarantees as no starting point for negotiations. NATO must table its own demands and way forward. He also stressed the right of all nations to decide about their own future and recalled the NATO-Russia Founding act which rejected “spheres of influence limiting the sovereignty of any state”.
