The conference was opened by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Ms. Anita Grmelová. The main organizers were the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Institute of World History, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague.

Seventy historians from nine European countries gathered to discuss the significance and consequences of the Treaty of Versailles, one of the most important events of the 20th century. The end of the First World War and the collapse of traditional monarchies should have been an opportunity for a fundamental transformation of Europe and the world, for the establishment of new political regimes and social structures. The most important platform for building a new world order was the peace talks in Paris, which ran from January 1919 to January 1920. They were to become essential for rebuilding of the world that would prevent the possibility of future wars.

The conference´s aim is to provide answers to the political, social and economic consequences of the Treaty of Versailles, not only for that immediate period of history, but also for the contemporary world.
