Czech Prime Minister's First Visit to Hong Kong and Macau

HE Jan Fischer, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, visited Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR on 4-6 September, 2009. He was accompanied by several high ranking Czech Government officials and a business mission organized by the Czech Chamber of Commerce. It was the first visit of the Czech Prime Minister in Hong Kong and Macau since the establishment of the Czech Republic in 1993.

In Hong Kong Prime Minister Fischer met Mr. Donald Tsang, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR on 5 September, 2009 in the Government House. Issues of a political and economic development in the Czech Republic and Hong Kong were among those discussed, as well as the bilateral trade and economic relations. The trade between the Czech Republic and Hong Kong reaches about USD 400 mil annually. More than 30% of Czech exports to China are passing through Hong Kong.

The Czech PM delivered a speech at a working breakfast organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The event was attended by over 70 leading Hong Kong businessmen, representing financial, logistics, trading, manufacturing and information technology sectors. PM Fischer highlighted in his speech the advantages of the Czech Republic as destination for investment and as a business partner. During the breakfast the Czech Chamber of Commerce signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and another one with the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce.

In Macau, PM Fischer met for bilateral talks with Mr. Edmund Ho, the Chief Executive of the Macau SAR. During the meeting the leaders covered economic and social developments in their respective jurisdictions, as well as the bilateral cooperation, which includes also cultural exchange, exhibitions and trade.
