Pražské Jezulátko

The presentation took place in Ballyheigue during the traditional Pattern Day open-air mass at Our Lady’s Well, a joyful annual celebration that brings together thousands of pilgrims from across Ireland to honour the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Ireland, Pavel Vošalík and Ireland’s Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Norma Foley attended the ceremony together with the county and town representatives.

This year’s mass was truly exceptional thanks to Prague's touching gesture. The gift carries a wonderful piece of history: it symbolically recalls the year 2004, when the Czech Republic first joined the EU under a previous Irish Presidency. Back then, the town of Killarney in County Kerry acted as the Czech Republic's official "welcoming town." Now, as Ireland took the helm of the Council of the EU once again, Prague is sending one of its most cherished historic symbols as a token of friendship.

To make this gift truly extraordinary, Prague City Tourism teamed up with leading Czech designers, fashion creators, glassmakers, and costume jewellery artisans. They beautifully blended historical symbolism with Czech craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Known in Ireland as the Child of Prague, the statuette instantly captured the hearts and admiration of the officials, special guests as well as the many pilgrims gathered for the festival.

In a beautiful nod to its new home, the Infant Jesus of Prague is dressed in a festive robe made of dark green velvet, celebrating Ireland’s rich national identity. The statue will be permanently and placed in the Church of St  John the Baptist in Tralee, where visitors and locals alike can appreciate this symbol of international friendship for years to come.
