Literary and Translation Seminar with Petra Hůlová and Alex Zucker

Date: 28 November 2023 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Venue: Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation, 36 Fenian St., Dublin, D02 CH22

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Dublin organised the 5th Literary and Translation Seminar in cooperation with the Center for Literary and Cultural Translations of Trinity College Dublin. The guests of the evening were Czech author Petra Hůlová and American translator Alex Zucker.

Both authors shared their experiences of their cooperation in working together with the audience. There were also excerpts from Petra Hůlova's book "A Brief History of the Movement" (2018), which was the last to be published in Alex Zucker's translation ("The Movement", 2021). The seminar was moderated by Dr. Jana Fischerová, lecturer at Trinity College Dublin.

Petra Hůlová is a successful Czech author. For her first book "Paměť mojí babičce" (2002), she was awarded the Magnesia Litera prize in the Discovery of the Year category. Its English translation was published in 2009 under the title "All This Belongs to Me". Alex Zucker’s third published translation with the English title "Three Plastic Rooms" (2017), was based on the original titled " Umělohmotný třípokoj" (2006). Alex Zucker is an award-winning American translator of Czech authors with a focus on translations of Czech female authors, as, in his opinion, female foreign-language writers are underrepresented in the English-language book market. In addition to Petra Hůlova, he has also translated the works of Bianca Bellová, Magdalena Platzová or Jáchym Topol.
