This course considers the unique connection in the Czech context between literature and film, the distinct focus on language – from the early days of sound film, to the 1960s Czechoslovak New Wave, to the present. The lectures will address some of the most beautiful and successful co-operations between writers and filmmakers – including the Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning teams of Jaroslav Papoušek and Miloš Forman; Bohumil Hrabal and Jiří Menzel; Zdeněk Svěrák and Jan Svěrák; and Petr Šabach, Petr Jarchovský and Jan Hřebejk. Lectures will include clips from the chosen movies. As this year we are marking the 30^th anniversary of the fall of Communism, the different challenges of filmmaking before and after 1989 will also be considered.
